Natural Health News – A new study has revealed that a drink made of broccoli sprouts can help clear body known carcinogens.
The clinical trial, involving nearly 300 men and women living in one of the most polluted regions of China Chinese, found that daily consumption of a half cup of juice broccoli sprouts produced a rapid, significant and sustained the highest excretion levels of benzene, a known human carcinogen, and acrolein, lung irritant.
Researchers at the School of Public Health Bloomberg Johns Hopkins University, in collaboration with colleagues from several US and Chinese institutions, used beverage broccoli sprouts to provide sulforaphane, a compound of the plant already it has been shown to have cancer-preventive properties in animal studies.
The study was published in the online edition of the journal Cancer Prevention Research .
A complex problem
“Air pollution is a complex and widespread problem of public health,” said John Groopman, PhD, professor Anna M. health Baetjer environmental at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and one of the co-authors of the study.
“To address this problem globally, in addition to engineering solutions to reduce regional emissions, we need to translate our basic science in strategies to protect individuals from these exposures. This study supports the development of food-based strategies as part of this comprehensive prevention effort. ”
Air pollution, a growing global problem, means that up to seven million deaths a year worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, and in recent years has reached dangerous levels in many parts from China.
Last year, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified air pollution and particulate matter (PM) air pollution as a carcinogen for humans.
Supporting the body
Diets high in cruciferous vegetables, which broccoli is one of reducing the risk of chronic degenerative diseases, including cancer . Broccoli sprouts are a source of glucoraphanin, a compound that generates sulforaphane when the plant is chewed or swallowed the drink. It acts to increase enzymes that enhance the body’s ability to clear these types of pollutants.
The 12-week trial included 291 men and women (average of 53) living in a rural farming community in Jiangsu Province, China, about 50 miles north of Shanghai, one of the most highly industrialized regions of China.
Participants in the control group drank a beverage made of juice, water, pineapple and sterilized lemon, while the drink for the treatment group also contained a dissolved lyophilized powder from outbreaks glucoraphanin and sulforaphane-rich broccoli. Blood and urine were taken during the assay to measure the fate of air pollutants inhaled.
The research team found that among participants receiving broccoli sprouts drink, the rate of excretion of carcinogenic benzene increased 61% from the first day and throughout the period of 12 weeks.
In addition, the rate of excretion of the irritant, quick and lasting acrolein increased 23% during the 12-week trial.
The secondary analysis of researchers indicated that sulforaphane may be exerting its protective actions at the molecular level, increasing the ability of cells to adapt and survive a wide range of environmental toxins.
safe and effective
“This study points to a frugal, simple and safe environment that can be taken by individuals, possibly to reduce some of the risks health associated with long-term air pollution, “says Thomas Kensler, PhD, a professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg school and one of the co-authors of the study. “This while government leaders and legislators to define and implement policies more effective regulation to improve air quality.”
The clinical trial is remarkable prevention orientation in evaluating a possible means to reduce the body burden of toxins following exposures to contaminants inevitable. Most clinical trials involving treatment of diseases that have already been presented or advanced in later stages. More clinical trials to evaluate the dose and frequency of outbreaks optimum beverage broccoli, are provided in the same general region of China.
