His daily glass of wine or beer can not so innocent after all.
Recent research has found a link between alcohol consumption and 7 different types of cancer, including breast, colon and liver cancer.
The review of the study, published in the scientific journal Addiction , argues that the evidence directly linking alcohol and cancer can no longer be ignored. The review examined 10 years of research conducted by the World Wide Fund for Cancer Research, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the body of cancer World Health Organization, and, according to the Guardian ( 1 ).
Jennie Connor, former head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, University of Otago in New Zealand and author of the study, said ( 2 ):
” there is strong evidence that alcohol causes cancer in seven sites in the body and probably others … Even without a complete understanding of the biological mechanisms [of how alcohol causes cancer], epidemiological evidence can support the judgment that alcohol causes cancer oropharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast. “
Although the average citizen is not aware of the connection, the National Toxicology Program of the Department of Health and Human Services list alcoholic drinks as a known human carcinogen ( 3 ).
Connor added that the substance can cause skin, prostate and pancreatic cancer. It is also worth mentioning that the risk of cancer due to alcohol is dose dependent, meaning that the more you drink per week, the greater the risk.
Currently, the US government dietary guidelines suggest that women should stick to one drink per day or less, while men should remain below 2 per day. 1 drink equals 12 ounces of beer, wine or 1.5 ounces ounces of spirits ( 4 ).
The pass this limit has consequences: 3.5 Chugging drinks can double or triple the risk of mouth, pharynx, larynx and esophagus. You can also increase your risk of colon cancer, rectum and breast cancer 1.5 times.
Other affected organs include the ovaries, stomach, uterus, bladder and kidneys and lymphatic system.
How alcohol causes cancer
Alcoholic beverages contain ethanol, which is broken down in the liver and bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract to acetaldehyde, a genotoxic carcinogen ( 5 ).
Toxic substance prevents cells repair themselves and even gets faster than normal growth of cells in the liver, which can lead to inappropriate gene expression in these new cells.
The process of digestion alcohol also generates reactive oxygen species (free radicals) that damage DNA, proteins and fats in your body and can cause cancer to develop.
Alcohol also affects the absorption of nutrients, including vitamin A, folic acid, carotenoids, which are important for the production and maintenance of DNA. Even it has the ability to increase the levels of hormones, which can lead to estrogen-sensitive breast and ovarian cancer and cancers.
Finally, the processes that create Alcohol also creates harmful substances such as nitrosamines, asbestos fibers, phenols and hydrocarbons.
What experts are saying
The connection between alcohol consumption and it is clear to the experts, but the population is a little harder to convince.
Dr. Jana Witt, an officer of health information at Cancer Research UK, said. “We know that nine out of 10 people are unaware of the relationship between alcohol and cancer and this review is a stark reminder that there is strong evidence linking the two. ”
A study by Dr. Witt organization found that only 1 in 5 Americans surveyed knew that alcohol could cause breast cancer, while 4 out of 5 people understand the relationship between excessive consumption alcohol and liver cancer.
it may take 10-15 years of sobriety to completely reverse the increased risk of cancer, so it’s never too early to give up the bottle.
In addition, heavy drinkers often engage in other risky behaviors, such as smoking. This bad habit actually increases the risk of alcohol-related cancers. Drinking and smoking increase the risk of cancer over every habit it makes on its own.
If you’re still not convinced, Elaine Hindal, chief executive of Drinkaware (one funded by charity education industry alcohol) warns that cancer is not all you have to worry: “Regularly drinking more low-risk government guidelines that puts them at increased risk of some cancers, and can also increase the risk of heart disease and liver, stroke and pancreatitis. ”
If you drink alcohol occasionally, stick to drinks containing anticancer compounds like wine, which contains resveratrol, and prioritize drinks mixed performed with low alcohol content ingredients such as beer, cider and wine. You can also try to entertain your guests with interesting juices instead of alcohol.
is also a good idea to stagger their drinks with other things, like juice and water, while in the city. If you are tempted often go to restaurants that do not serve alcohol and empty liquor cabinet :. When you drink is not desirable, it becomes less tempting to do
Instead of drinking for stress, change your glass of wine to relax with a cup of tea or a hot bath.
